Production of the UK’s top selling car the Ford Fiesta has started at Ford’s Cologne assembly plant. This latest version of the Ford Fiesta will debut in UK dealerships in January. The first Ford Fiesta went into production in 1976, almost four million have been sold in the UK and more than fifteen million sold worldwide.
The latest Ford Fiesta features new smart technologies and a breakthrough powertrain line-up. Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe said “the new Fiesta has seven powertrain options both diesel and petrol that deliver fuel economy of less than 100 grams of CO2 per kilometre.” The new Fiesta is also offered with 1.0-litre EcoBoost the 2012 “International Engine of the Year”, an ECOnetic technology version powered by a 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine which achieves 87 g/km CO2.
The new Fiesta also features voice-activated in-car connectivity system SYNC and SYNC Emergency Assistance that directly connects vehicle occupants to local emergency services operators after an accident.
Ford has introduced the new low speed collision avoidance system ‘Active City Stop’ in the new Ford Fiesta. This new system uses a sophisticated light-detecting and ranging sensor to scan the road ahead fifty times every second, more than twice the speed of the movie industry standard frame rate to help prevent collisions at speeds up to 10mph, and help reduce the severity of impacts at speeds below 20mph. Florian Schweter, new Fiesta Active City Stop development engineer, Ford of Europe said “urban areas are breeding grounds for low-speed accidents caused by drivers failing to notice that the car in front has stopped. High traffic volumes, lots of potential distractions and slow-moving, stop-start traffic mean Active City Stop can provide a much-needed extra eye on the road.” Alongside these new technologies the new Fiesta debuts Ford MyKey in Europe a Ford exclusive technology that allows parents to encourage safer driving and limit their teenager’s exposure to risk at the wheel. Keys may be configured with a variety of settings and feature Speed Control which gives the owner the ability to limit the top speed to 80 mph plus Volume Control allowing the owner to adjust the volume of the radio remotely and Beltminder to remind the driver to buckle their seat belt by muting the vehicle's radio and chiming for six seconds every minute for five minutes, there is also an additional feature of an earlier fuel reminder and a speed reminder chime at 45, 55 or 65 mph.
Prices for the new Ford Fiesta start from £9,795 on-the-road in the UK and will be available in showrooms from early 2013.
